Goals vs Systems

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

Everyone loves to set new goals. It feels great to do it. It’s physiologic, when we’re setting new goals our brains secrete more dopamine, and we feel motivated, empowered and determined. Guess what? That doesn’t matter.

Everyone wants to lose weight, build muscles, get stronger, run faster, run longer, etc… Yet most don’t. “If you want better results, then forget about setting goals. Focus on your systems instead”. That’s a quote from a book called Atomic Habits, and today we’ll talk about it, and how it can help with your health and fitness journey.

According to James Clear, the book’s author, we shouldn’t focus on outcome-based habits, which are simply what we want to achieve. Instead, we should focus our resources into how we are going to achieve it, or even better, into how to become the person we wish to become.

So for example, if your goal is to lose weight, you probably want to become someone who exercises most days, someone who eats healthy foods, someone who sleeps 8h every night, etc. How can you become that person?

To build the habits we want, Clear suggests we make them obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying. For example:

Create your systems first. Be patient, stick to it and they’ll become habits. At some point, they’ll be so ingrained in your day-to-day life and you won’t even picture yourself not doing them. Goals are cool, but implementing systems is what really gets us there!
