Big picture thinking and training

Updated: Jul 31, 2023

How’s your training going? Do you know exactly how many exercises, reps, tempo, rest intervals you’ve been doing? No? Well, probably that doesn’t matter too much.

Let me explain… I used to be extremely focused on all of those variables. I would program detailed six month program periodizations for all my clients. They looked really good on paper, and made perfect sense according to the most recent science, but more often than expected, clients were not getting the results they wanted.

It took me a while to realize that we were focusing too much on the details and too little on the big picture. And what I mean by that is that we were not having enough conversations about their lifestyle. Things like nutrition, sleep and stress management.

You can have the best exercise program in the world, but if you’re eating terrible foods, sleeping 5-6h a night and having a hard time dealing with a stressful life, let me tell you, YOU WILL NOT GET RESULTS.

Exercise frequency is also key. If you’re doing all the above well, but you’re exercising only once a week for 45minutes, that’s probably not good enough either.

So I recommend focusing on these big rocks first:

- Don’t stay more than 2 days in a row without exercising;

- Eat healthy. You know what to eat and especially, WHAT NOT TO EAT.

- Sleep 8-9 hours a night.

- Be aware that stress is part of life and we can’t control that, but it’s in our control how we PERCEIVE and RESPOND to it, and that’s the key. Also, find something you truly enjoy doing, and book it in your calendar, every week. Could be playing tennis, going to the beach, hiking, reading a book, whatever you like. Make sure you plan your week accordingly, so you have time for it.

After all that is into place, we can start talking about the training sets, reps, exercises and so on. Make sure you do that, trust the process and HAVE FUN with it, and great results will follow.
