Are you too busy to exercise because of your work? I think you should exercise FOR your work. At least if you want to have the best possible performance…
The benefits of exercise are not only physical but also COGNITIVE. For a long time we believed that after fully developed, the brain wouldn’t produce new neurons, but now we know that’s not true, and physical exercise is an amazing tool to stimulate the neurogenesis.
With the new neurons, new blood vessels are formed and we increase the production of BDNF-Brain derived neurotrophic factor, a protein that promotes cognitive function and alleviates symptoms of anxiety and depression.
So you’ll work better BECAUSE OF THE EXERCISE. These are some of the adaptations we can expect from exercise:
Better memory
Better problem-solving capacity
Increased attention span
Faster thinking
Better social skills (ability to interact with others)
Moreover, exercising consistently arguably will allow you to work (well!) for longer, because it also diminishes the rate of brain gray matter loss that happens with aging.
So if work is a priority for you and you don’t exercise, you are doing yourself a disservice. You’ll discover a whole different version of yourself once you get into an exercise routine. Don’t leave for tomorrow what can be done today!
